Anita Baker's voice & music are both timeless. She is perfection and classic. I love her. This morning while my AB Spotify radio channel played, this song came on and caught my attention. I've always liked it. But, it resonated today because of a current situation in my life. I'm not a big fan of people who shut down emotionally. It disturbs my spirit on so many levels. I cannot be there for you if you do not "Talk To Me." It;s that simple. I am frustrated but Anita worked it out for me. I've done my part, done the work. That's all I can do. And, now, I'm going to listen to Anita and vibe for a little while longer. Get into these classic lyrics below and song above. Enjoy!!
"Ooh, baby, baby, baby
You stand all alone on your own Please come inside from the storm Stand where it's warm, I can see you're in need Baby, please talk to me now
Swear nothin' is wrong, you're so strong Baby don't hold this inside Relax your pride let it go, set it free My baby, talk to me now
What's wrong, wrong with you? Why don't you tell me what you're going through, darlin'? What's wrong, wrong with you? Why don't you tell me what you're going through? I can help you if you let me baby, yes I can
I understand, here's my hand Why stand alone in the dark open up your heart Let this go, set it free Now my baby, talk to me now..."
It's ten minutes long and could never be a single. But, Erykah Badu's "Green Eyes" is essentially three songs wrapped in one. The beat changes three times. The lyrics are intoxicating. This has been one of my favorite by Badu since "Mama's Gun" dropped. I was reminded of its brilliance when it played on my Spotify radio a few minutes ago. Great song that everyone can relate to. I love that it is so dope that you never realize that it is ten minutes long. Great piece by Badu. PErfect choice for my "Ladies Love Lyrics" posts. Get into the lyrics and video below.
The Sundance Channel had a series called "Iconoclasts." It pairs two different artists together and they are filmed for a day. This particular interview was filmed in 2006. I just discovered it this week after the passing of Dr. Maya Angelou. It features Maya Angelou and Dave Chappelle in an in-depth conversation. I loved how amazing it was. Maya's voice is one of the most unique ones ever. She speaks with such knowledge and wisdom. This interview also gave me a better insight into Dave Chappelle as well. If you have never seen it, please take the time to do so now. You will enjoy it. Get into it.
This song stopped me in my tracks to day. I used to play it constantly back in 2001. I thought that Glenn Lewis would have a great career. I was wrong. His debut cd was just plain dope, lyrically and musically. His voice is so soothing to me. "Something To See" wasn't a single and it should have been one. It was one of the best tracks on the cd. Let's get into it and it's lyrics.
"I was thinking you and me could start again, fulfill a dream Read that somewhere we would find a paradise Walls of change have clearly fell, showing loves cry out for help But if you only try with me, you'd see that we
Should be trying to find a cause for our own flaws But know that just to be with you In a love that's truly free That could be you and me
It'd be something to see 'Cause you know we're too far gone To ever be the same way we've been so long It'd be something to see, we can make it if we hold on The way it should be with love leading us along..."
Sometimes you hear a song and it stops you in your tracks. This happened yesterday. Case has always been a fave of mine. His early cd's were golden to me. This track "No Regrets" features Charlie Wilson and has always made me happy. This is about a losing a love but really wanted it back. Case has a voice that makes me feel every word he sings. Get into the video above and the lyrics below. I know you guys will love it like I do.
"Loving you was incredible It came so natural to me Cause you were always available For every one of my wants and needs We always talked about settling down Raising a family But sometimes in life our plans ain't meant to be, ooh yeah
Baby I've tried But couldn't say What I really did want from you Baby and now My life, my life hasn't been the same No, no, no babe Can we give it a chance Can we start all over again Before we throw it all away, I just need to know
Here I go around again Just won't let it die Being wrong or being right I just have to try Love leads me right back to you It never tells me why I ain't gonna go through life With no regrets
Now we can start by makin' apologies But saying sorry ain't gonna make it right All the spiteful things you done said to me Cause I heard you a million times But now I've learned how to express What's really on my mind So I'm telling you I need you in my life..."
I am a Spotify fanatic. I love it. I listen to it more than Pandora lately. So, this song comes on and stops me short. I've always loved Christina Aguilera's "Impossible." It is my favorite song off her best cd "Stripped" in my opinion. Something about the lyrics hit me deep today. If you've ever been in this situation then you know what it is. Listen and vibe with me.
"It's impossible It's impossible to love you If you don't let me know what you're feeling It's impossible for me to give you what you need If you're always hidin' from me
I don't know what hurt you I just, I wanna make it right Cos boy I'm sick and tired of trying to read your mind
It's impossible (impossible) Oh baby it's impossible for me to love you It's the way it is It's impossible (impossible) Oh baby it's impossible If you makin' it this way
Impossible to make it easy If you always tryin' to make it so damn hard How can I, how can I give you all my love, baby If you're always, always puttin' up your guard
This is not a circus Don't you play me for a clown How long can emotions keep on goin' up and down
It's impossible (impossible) Oh baby it's impossible for me to love you It's the way it is It's impossible (impossible) Oh baby it's impossible If you keep treating me this way Over, over (over and over)"
BLACKgirl was one of my favorite one hit wonder groups. Their debut cd "Treat U Right" was awesome. I still love it. I was writing and listening to an old mixed cd when this song came on. I literally stopped what I was doing to have a full on moment. This was my song. My high school BFF Shay and I played this cd out. We were total fans. So, I had to share a throwback with you guys. IF you've never heard this track before, get into it. If you have, reminisce with me. Enjoy!!
"Now is the time for us to say goodbye You go your way and I'll go mine Life must go on which means I've got to carry on but I wanna know Kenda where did we go wrong? Where did we go wrong?
I remember times you made me laugh all the times you made me cry you wiped the tears the tears from my eyes oh yes you did God blessed us with love from heaven up above So won't you tell me now where did we go wrong?
Oh, oh Where, where did we go wrong after all that we've been through? Was it something that we did not do? Tell me where did we go wrong?"
There are some songs that just stay with you. I still feel the same way about Outkast's "Liberation" now that I did the first time I heard it. I actually remember exactly where I was when I first heard it. I was at the House of Blues on a Thursday night. There was a set called "Soul II Soul" College Nights that happened weekly. It was hosted by Rob Nice and DJ'ed by Raj Smoove and Bigg Cheez. My friends and I were regulars. So much so that the bouncers knew us by name and bartenders knew us by our drinks. Don't judge us! :) It was about 2 am when Raj dropped "Liberation." I remember that I stopped dancing to just listen and feel this track. I was enthralled with it. I had to have this song. I knew it was Outkast, Erykah and Goodie Mob from the jump/ I was a fan from that moment. Raj would drop it again before we left. I purchased Outkast's "Aquemini" the next day. I loved it. But, this was always my favorite track. Everything about it is perfect. The beat is dope, the lyrics are great, and it moved me then. And still does today. So, since this song was stuck in my head, I had to share.
(Andre) "And there's a fine line between love and hate you see
Came way too late, but baby I'm on it.. And there's a fine line between love and hate you see Came way too late, but baby I'm on it.. Can't worry bout, what a nigga think now see That's Liberation and baby I want it.. Can't worry bout, what another nigga think Now that's Liberation and baby I want it..
(Big Boi) (Let me hear it, let me hear it, let me hear those, let me hear those) How many times I, sit back and contemplate I'm fresh off the dank, but I'm telling my story.. My relationship, with my folks is give and take And I done took so much, not giving my glory Now have a choice to be who you wants to be It's left uppa to me, and my momma n'em told me (yes she did) I said I have a choice to be who you wants to be It's left uppa to me, and my momma n'em told me
(Cee-Lo) No, no, no I'm so tired, it's been so long - struggling, hopelessly Seven and forty days.. hey Oh, I sacrifice every breath I breathe To make you believe, I'd give my life away Oh lord, I'm so tired, I'm so tired My feet feel like I walked most of the road on my own All on my own, wee.. We alive or we ain't living, that's why I'm giving until it's gone Cause I don't wanna be alone (I don't wanna be alone) I don't wanna be alone.. yeah If there's anything I can say, to help you find your way Touch your soul, make it whole, the same for you and I.. There's not a minute that goes by that I don't believe that you die.. but I can feel it in the wind The beginning or the end But people keep your head to the sky
Shake that load off, shake that load off, Shake that load off, shake that load off
Shake that load off, shake that load off, Shake that load off, shake that load offShake that load off, shake that load off, Shake that load off, shake that load off
Shake that load off, shake that load off, Shake that load off, shake that load off
(Erykah Badu) Folk in your face, you're a superstar N***as hang around cause of who you are You get a lot of love cause of what you got Say they happy for you but they really not Sell a lot of records and you roll a Benz Roll up in the spot, now you losing friends All you wanna do is give the world your heart but the label tried to make you compromise your art You make a million dollars, make a million mo' First class broad treat you like a n***a po' You wanna say "Wait!" but you're scared to ask as your world starts spinning and it's moving fast Try to stay sane, it's the price of fame Spending your life trying to numb the pain You shake that load off and sing a song Liberate the minds, then you go on home.."
It's time for my first Ladies Love Lyrics of 2013. I am in love with Songza. It has ended my love affair with Pandora for now. I have a station called "The Definitive Soul Collection." It is e-very-thing to me. It plays all of my favorite old school and new school hits. That is where I came up with today's pick. I was an uber Karyn White fan. "Superwoman" was her biggest hit. So, let's reminisce a bit.
"Early in the morning I put breakfast at your table.
And make sure that your coffee has its sugar and cream.
Your eggs are over easy, your toast done lightly.
All that's missing is your morning kiss that use to greet me.
Now you say the juice is sour It used to be so sweet.
And I can't help but to wonder If you're talking 'bout me.
We don't talk the way we used to talk.
It's hurting so deep I've got my pride, I will not cry.
But it's making me weak.
Chorus:
I'm not your superwoman.
I'm not the kind of girl that you can let down.
And think that everything's okay.
Boy, I am only human.
This girl needs more than occasional hugs.
As a token of love from you to me, ooh, baby
I fought my way through the rush hour.
Trying to make it home just for you.
I want to make sure that your dinner will be waiting for you.
But when you get there you just tell me
You're not hungry at all.
You said you'd rather read the paper.
And you don't want to talk.
You'd like to think I'm just crazy
When I say that you've changed.
I'm convinced I know the problem
You don't love me the same You're just going through the motions
And you're not being fair
I've got my pride, I will not cry.
Still I can't help but care
Chorus:
I'm not your superwoman.
I'm not the kind of girl that you can let down.
And think that everything's okay.
Boy, I am only human.
This girl needs more than occasional hugs
As a token of love from you to me... "
My second throwback pick comes from Joss Stone. I have always loved her voice. The song is "Spoiled." I have loved it for years. And, again, I heard it on Songza one night when I couldn't sleep. My Ultimate R&B Collection station is basically golden. I can never go wrong with it. I wonder where Joss is. Get intot he video and lyrics below.
"I kinda thought that I'd be better off by myself
I've never been so wrong before
You made it impossible for me to ever
Love somebody else
And now I don't know what I left you for
See I thought that I could replace you
He can't love me the way you do
'Till now I never knew
Baby
[Chorus:]
I'm spoiled
By your love boy
No matter how I try to change my mind
What's the point it's just a waste of time
I'm spoiled by your touch boy
The love you give is just too hard to fight
Don't want to live without you in my life
I'm spoiled
I tried to tell myself that I'd be over you in a week or two
But baby that was 'bout a year ago
I've never seen the word love so personified as I do with you
And that is why I just can't let go, oh no..."
This will be my last "Ladies Love Lyrics" for 2012. I decided to reach back for this pick. I wanted to end the year with one of my childhood favorite tracks. The song is "Sparkle" by Cameo. This song means so much to me. My Dad used to sing this all the time. He loved to sing and he could sing so well. I miss those moments. I had not heard this track in well over a decade. So, when it played on Songza last week, I couldn't stop smiling. It instantly brought me back to my childhood home. Hope you guys enjoy this track as much as I have.
"When I first saw you
Like the starts at night
You had sparkle in your eye
High in the sky
How I wish
That you were mine
Cause to me
You're one of a kind
When I look at you
Can make me feel the way you do
It seems so untrue
How someone like you
Sparkle in your eye (I see that sparkle in your eye)
Sparkle in your eye (Ohohohwhoaha)
Sparkle in your eye..."
I heard this today and it brought me back. I've always loved this song and it always makes me feel good. I think that music scene today is mising some of the heart and soul of music from the 80's and 90's. Anyway, feel free to vibe out with me :) Troop "Spread My Wings"
I wanna love you
a little
wanna hold you close
and keep you warm
maybe if only just for a little while
we could pretend that I was yours
and you were mines
that this right here
right now
is the gospel truth
wish we could exist here
in this world
where nothing matters but
the two of us
the place where
we never let the outside in
if only for a moment
if only for a minute
me loving you would be good
would be fine
would be right
cause in here
we are one
we are it
we are love
but this is all a
fallacy of my imagination
the thing I dream when
I close my eyes
when I hear your voice
feel your touch
but in my bed
in the dark
alone with my thoughts & you
we are what I dreamed
and for that short period of time
I grasp hold to this
altered reality
