"You're the perfect verse over a tight beat."

"Brown Sugar" has to be one of my favorite movies hands down. I love it all...the musical aspect, the relationships, the comedy all resonate deep within me. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it. I still feel the exact same way about the movie, the storyline, the characters that I did the first night. "Brown Sugar" is the perfect quintessential Black romantic comedy. The Hollywood brass got it so right on this one.

The title of this post is my favorite line in the whole movie. Followed closely by one of the last lines in the movie: "Sid, you're my air!" *insert pic of me swooning* Lol. The poet in me loves the musical analogy of Dre comparing a woman he loves to the music that he loves. It's quite possible the highest compliment one can receive if you're engrossed into music. This one line, those eight words, literally made me gasp. It was perfectly written and greatly executed. It was Dre telling Sidney that he loved her in his own secret way. I love that. This one line always gets a tear or two out of me. What can I say, I'm apparently a romantic. I live for the sappy stuff...on tv, in books and in music. I'm not so sure if I could handle that in real life though.

Have we become so desensitized to real romance? It's like I only expect to see this level of romantic lines and action on characters in movies & shows & books? Or could it be that I just haven't met the right guy yet? One of my best friends says that the right one will say the right words to make you swoon. I'm beginning to believe that more and more. Until that day comes, I'll continue to enjoy "Brown Sugar" for what it is.

Emotional Walls

"Sometimes the walls you put up to protect your fragile broken heart, have a tendency to keep out the love you need to move on." - Me

Emotional walls.

We all have them.

We've all put them up in an effort to self-protection. But, is it possible that those same walls are preventing you from receiving love? Once I had my heart broken, it's been a really rough road to letting any other man get close to my heart. I finally realized that I was punishing myself. I faulted myself for my ex breaking my heart. I was so wrapped up in loving him that I lost me. So, I didn't think I was deserving of love. I mean, how could I be? I was broken and hurt and lost. It took me a good year before I finally felt whole again. I made a conscious decision to open myself up to the possibility of love. That was a huge step for me. But, at the beginning of the year, I finally felt ready. My emotional walls are coming down. I'm allowing myself the right to feel, to love, to be. And, maybe, just maybe, this time I'll get it right.

Ambitious Girl by Wale

“Ambitious Girl” by @Wale

Ambitious girl, your drive drives me crazy.
I’m trying to stay with you, lay with you.
I’ll pay your tuition and pray with you
if you ain’t into wishing.
I’m trying to f-ck the sh-t outta your aspirations, see.
The last one I dated, I hated
We’d wake up, I’d go to work, she leave out
come back with some makeup, high heels and a purse
or worse I’ll ask her “Baby girl. what you aspire to be?”
And she’ll reply to me like “Why you perspiring me?”
Pardon me, if I’m sweating you but
I wanna see something else in you before I invest in you.
Ambitious girl, what it’s hitting for?
I’d rather you tell me to hit you later cause you gotta finish a paper
than to be in my face asking for a Rose’ cup.
See this b-tches can’t cut in yo business, I’m in love with your business.
Your productivity is the reason I interest, Ambitious girl.
See, I like the person that you are
but I’m in love with the person that you have potential to be.
And, all your dream sharing with me, secrets bearing with me
and the flaws you don’t even gotta mention to me.
Ambitious girl, you just wanna win.
And, you’d rather chase your dreams than try to chase these men
that try to chase these skirts, that try to chase these shots with
flavors that ain’t even as sweet as her.
My Ambitious Girl, I won’t forget you
I just reflect on how I ain’t met you yet, boo.
You somewhere getting your life in order.
So for this time being, I hope this open scribe mic support her.
It support her, the worker, she worth it.
Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl,
Ambition, ambition, ambition, ambition, ambition,
Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl, Go girl,
I just want you to have something to listen to
maybe in the morning…

“There’s gonna be some stuff you’re gonna see that’s gonna make it hard to smile in the future, but through whatever you see, through all the rain and all the pain, you gotta keep your sense of humor. You gotta be able to smile through all this bullsh-t.” — Tupac Amaru Shakur

In a Great Place

(Disclaimer: I do not know who the author of this piece is but it's inspiring & I thought I'd share it)

Instead of placing judgments on where you find yourself, consider the positive possibilities. Instead of extending assumptions out from your limitations, imagine your most treasured dreams extending out from your current situation.

If you feel stuck where you are, you’re mistaken. Anything is possible, when you engage the power of your imagination.

The things that have already happened can give you some useful insight and perspective. Yet your future is whatever you choose right now to make it.

You don’t have to be magically transported away from where you are in order to experience fulfillment. You can begin making your way forward from wherever you may be, in whatever direction you choose.

It’s easy to blame your circumstances for holding you back. It’s much more powerful, though, to accept those circumstances and begin working with the value they offer.

You’re in a great place, because from where you are you can go anywhere. Look around, with positive expectations, and step forward in the direction of your dreams.
