Life of a Writer

“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
- Anaïs Nin

Writers are extremely creative people. This is also the gift and the curse. I believe that artists feel things more deeply than other people do. I know that I feel things very deeply. I sit with them for longer than I should, I worry about them much more than I should. This is just who I am. Just what my life is. I am a writer. I have been since at least the 3rd grade. It has been the thing I've most valued about myself. But, it's also the thing that drives me crazy. Whatever I am feeling or dealing with invades every aspect of my thinking. When I sit down to write, no matter the subject, I will end up writing about my current state of mind. This is fine if and only if I am writing for myself. But, when I am attempting to blog, this is a nuisance. I write about the exact thing I would rather not talk about. It makes my blogs sad and angry. And, I do not like to project those feelings into the universe. So, this makes it hard to blog daily. But, I write and write until I can get around my issue. I wonder if this is common for other writers? If they too deal with this stumbling block. I don't like it but I can't shake it. I guess it's just the creative process I have to go through to get to the good stuff. It's hard but worth it. So, here I sit, writing about anything but the topic at hand until the words find me. I have learned that this takes time. And, sometimes the words don't ever show up. Then, I just stop and start over the next day. It's what writers do. It's what I do.

A Novel Idea

One of my goals in life is to write novels. It's been a long term goal since I was in college. I've always been a lover of literature. Reading has been my hobby for as far back as I can remember. I've always allowed myself to become submerged in the world that authors create. Writers, to me, have long been the artists who painted the most vivid pictures in my mind with their words. I've always wanted to be able to do that. It started with poetry for me. In high school, I wrote for the yearbook and newspaper. I've written a bunch of short stories. This blog has helped me to get into the habit of writing daily. But, honestly, tackling my book scares me. I know it shouldn't but it does. I don't want to mess it up.

I've been kicking around ideas for characters and plots. I don't want to tell a story that's been done before. I don't want to do something that's different from my perspective. I want to develop and flesh out 3 dimensional characters. My goal as a writer is to write something that touches and moves people. I want to be one of the greats. I know I have to just buckle down and write. Just let the words flow from me. The words will come. They always do. I'm blogging about it to push myself into action. I've found that putting what you want out into the universe works. I'm speaking it into existence...amongst other things. I am a writer. I just needed a nudge to get started writing.

My Truth!

I think this is so true of all writers. The words have to come out!

The Written Word

"The writers, they write." - dream hampton

For as long as I can remember, I have been a writer. It's the thing that brings me the most peace. It started as short stories and poems as a kid. I will never forget the feeling of accomplishment I would get from spinning my words into a tale. I was amazed that it came from me. I wrote in private for a very long time. I kept a journal full of my words. I always had a very healthy and active imagination. That is still the case.

"The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say." - Anaïs Nin

I love to write. I write about everything and nothing all the time. It's part of the reason I started this blog. I needed an outlet to all the things in my head. As a teenager, I started leaning more towards poetry. I became enthralled with it, especially spoken word. Once I got a taste of that, I was all in. I have a bunch of notebooks filled with my poetry. My writing has helped me through a ton of different issues. So in a way, writing has been therapeutic for me.

"I hate writing. I love having written." - Dorothy Parker

I had a dream once about a book I wrote. I am still nurturing this story. It's in me and I need to get it out soon. I always think of the Toni Morrison quote, "If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." I feel like I have a few to tell. I'm excited about my writing. Excited and scared to death to share "my babies" with the public. It's a big step for me to share my heart, my passion with others outside of my circle. But, I know it will be worth it in the end. So, this writer will continue to write until I have no more stories to tell and no more words to write.

"There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." - Ernest Hemingway
