Oh, How I Love New Shows!

When it comes to summer television programming, it used to be nothing but reruns. But, times have changed drastically. Now, most channels offer specific new summer programming. I have a few faves like USA's "Royal Pains" and CBS' "Big Brother." This summer brings a few new shows that I can't wait to watch. Let's discuss.

USA is known for their summer programming. This summer is no different. The new anti-buddy cop show is called "Common Law." My initial interest in the show was based solely on the eye candy that is Michael Ealy. I have been a fan of his since "Barber Shop." I tuned in just to see that face and that smile. Turns out, the show is pretty dope. It's a lighthearted turn on the tried and true cop show formula. It is like the polar opposite of one of my all time favorite shows "Law & Order SVU." Ealy plays Travis Marks, a former foster kid turned playboy Detective. His partner, Detective Wes Mitchell, is a lawyer turned very straight laced, recently divorced detective. The two are in couples counseling because their constant fighting is causing trouble at work. Of course, comedy ensues. The show is very cute. It airs at 9pm on Fridays.

TVLand is jumping into the fray with a new show. "The Soul Man" stars Cedric the Entertainer as Reverend Boyce Ballentine, a soul singer turned preacher who uproots his entire life and family to take over his Father's church. His wife, Lolli, is played by Niecey Nash, his daughter Lyric played by Jazz Raycole are not adjusting well to the new changes in their life. Boyce's life is rounded out with his Father and lazy brother as well as the members of his church. It premiered on Wednesday, June 20th @ 9pm. The series premiere was funny, insightful and music. I think it's a really cute show. I will continue to watch. And, I love seeing functional Black families displayed in a positive light on television. The show airs @ 9pm on Wednesdays.

Next on my list is the ABC Family comedy "Baby Daddy." I have to say that I wanted to see this show for Tahj Mowry. I've liked him since his "Full House" and "Smart Guy" days. This show is essentially the tv modern version of the hit movie "Three Men & a Baby." That may be the appeal for me since I loved both of those movies. It's always funny to see people's funny antics when it comes to babies. And, of course, none of the 4 main characters have any real experience with babies. The twins who portray baby Emma are adorable. Adorable kids will always draw me in. This show is cute and I will be watching. It airs on Wednesdays @ 7pm.

I kinda have a love/hate relationship with summer shows. They are great but they take forever to return. On the nights when it's too hot to be out and about, mindless tv makes any night better. I can only watch reruns of shows I really love. There aren't many on that list. So, I'm always on the lookout for something new to indulge in. What are your favorite summer shows? Are you watching either of the two above? Tell me your thoughts.

Get Into It: HGTV's "Kitchen Cousins

I am an HGTV junkie. It's one of my favorite channels. I spend my weekends watching this channel and ABC Family. There is always something interesting to watch. HGTV feeds my inner interior decorator. Shows like "House Hunters," "Love It or List It," "My First Place," and "Property Brothers" are staple favorites of mine.

My latest obsession on this channel is "Kitchen Cousins." My favorite rooms in houses are kitchens and master suites. This show definitely indulges me in one area. The premise of the show is two cousins named John & Anthony gut and redo kitchens. It's essentially a kitchen makeover show. They do the renovations in little to no time. And, I haven't seen a "Kitchen Cousins" renovation that I haven't automatically loved. These guys are great at what they do.

Cabinet finishes, granite counters and wood floors make me immensely happy. I just love to see what the cousins/hosts come up with. Their work sparks so many ideas in me for my future kitchen. The show airs new episodes on Wednesdays on HGTV @ 7pm. Do yourself a favor and get into it. I can honestly say that you win not be disappointed.

My One TV Obsession

From the time I was about five, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. A lawyer. I used to watch "Perry Mason" all the time. I wanted to be the one to question people on the stand. I was overly impressed with the whole process. My love of the law and courtrooms has never really waned. I looked at lawyers as commanding the courtroom. They represented power and control to me. Now, my career aspirations may have changed. But certain things have not. I LOVE a courtroom/law/attorney/cop television show. There are plenty of them to chosen from on tv. I've been a fan of shows like "Ally McBeal," "Law and Order," "Law and Order: Criminal Intent," and "L.A. Law." But, my all time favorite has to be "Law and Order SVU."

I call it my tv obsession. It's the show that always has my attention. I've been a fan since the beginning. There is just something about it hat pulled me in from the beginning. I have loved almost all of the cops and ADA's and DA's from this show. The partnership of Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler has been a great one to watch. They were my early favorites. But, by far, my absolute favorite character on the show is Detective Fin Tutuola played by Ice T. Every characters just works on this show. SVU has been on for years and it still is fresh. The show always finds a way to present a new crime and case. There are times that I am caught completely offguard by the outcome. Those are the best shows.

I swear I've seen every SVU episode. This does not stop me from watching it whenever its on. I love the marathons on USA on the weekends. They never get old to me. Most people can't understand why I rematch the episodes. I just really love them. They are so good to me. I think its cause I have such a love for the law. I like the way I get to see it all play out from the crime to the officers working the case to the ADA's presenting it in court. It captures my complete attention. This show is one of my favorite things to watch. It's like a hobby or slight tv obsession. It's quite possibly the one show on tv I could never give up. What about you guys? What's the one show that you have to watch? Tell me.

Just Say No To Reality TV

Hello. My name is Kenda and I am addicted to reality tv. I was a reluctant viewer at first. But now, I am deeply immersed in it. I've come to the conclusion that my intelligence is really being insulted by this dumbing down of American television. I need an exit strategy asap. So, in this very beginning of this new year, I feel the need to ween myself off of it.

The first causalities of this year has been "Brandy & Ray J Family Business." This was an easy decision because Ray J is beyond wack. This is further made obvious by the fact that he has no clue that he thinks he is so cool. This show comes off very scripted and just forced. So, I'm clearly saying bye-bye to the Norwoods. Another one that has to go is Teen mom and 16 & Pregnant. These two shows only make me mad.

Now, there are shows that will be much harder for me to let go off. I am a fanatic behind the Real Housewives franchise. I am currently watching the Atlanta and Beverly Hills seasons. I will finish these seasons and be done with them. The New York and Orange County women will be back on the scene soon. I will not even get back into those franchises. I am a Big Brother, Four Weddings, Bridezilla, Jersey Shore, Top Chef, Say Yes To The Dress, Te Real World, and America's Next Top Model fan as well. These shows will not be watched anymore. I just cannot do it. I am beginning to feel dumber by the day for watching such cleverly disguised trash. I am over it in 2011.

I think I need to spend more time feeding my intelligence. I have to be more conscious of what I take in. I think I need to read more or watch more things on the History Channel. The reality tv explosion does not seem as if it's going anywhere any time soon. I am just respectfully declining from participating. I need more from entertainment. I deserve more for me and my mind in 2011. And, I'm going get it, by any means necessary!

The Faux Celebrity

Remember the days of actual talented celebrities? It seems like so long ago. In 2010, we are handed a bunch of faux celebrities. People, mainly women, who have no real talent but everyone knows their names. You guys know who I'm speaking of. Folks such as Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian & her family, Superhead, Kat Stacks, Tiger woods' mistresses, and Jesse James' mistresses. Women who've used sex and sex tapes to garner their faux fame. When did this become the norm? Why are these people featured on magazines and talk shows and the like?

I swear I wish I had never head of none of these people. They are seemingly simple and vapid people. But, also kinda smart. They used what they had to get the fame, notoriety, and money. The public eats it up. I refuse to indulge in the simplicity. My mind cannot wrap itself around the fact that this is real life. We've become so caught up in the fakness that reality has become lost. Reality tv isn't real life. I want movie & tv stars back. Actual, real life people with God given talent. I do like some reality tv shows. But, I'm not a fan of these people. I don't wanna see them on my tv, on the computer and on magazines week in and week out.

Truth be told, I don't see this trend ending any time soon. The public is too caught up in the fascination of it all. I don't support this. I just can't. My intelligence won't let me. I know where I will and won't spend my money. I know what I will watch and won't watch. Everyone else can keep and idolize these faux celebs. I'll be late for that (c @brookandthecity) lol.
