My Take on Interracial Love

Paul Walker. Johnny Depp. Chad Michael Murray. Robin Thicke. Matt Czuchry. All white men who I think are adorable. My Love always teases me about my "thing" for white boys. I admit I think that all men can be attractive no matter what race. I've just always loved Black men. There has always been something interesting to me about brown skin. Love is wonderful. I think that Black on Black love is the most amazing thing ever. Whenever I thought about my future, there was always a Black man next to me as my husband and father of my little brown babies. That has always been my happily ever after. That is what I want. It's my dream.

The subject of interracial dating came up during a conversation last night. My Love asked me if I would still be with him if he were a white guy. I said that we probably would never have gotten to this point if he were. Yes, he is the ying to my yang. But, that all came later. After we knew so much about each other. I think that the reality is I would have had an issue with his race. That would have been a hurdle for me to fully overcome. The reality is I fell in love with his soul, his heart, and his personality. The way he looks just happens to be a bonus. In hindsight, I am sure that I gave him a kneejerk answer. I've never really entertained the idea.

Because I've never been a big believer in interracial relationships for myself. I think life is tough enough and only a Black man could understand my plight. We share the same history. A Black man would just get me inherently. There are things as Black people that I wouldn't have to explain to him. There are race conversations that I don't want to have to expound on with someone who isn't Black. Race relations have become explosive lately. What if this white man says the wrong thing? Or if he believed that slavery was correct or even worse denies its existentence? These are things I would not be able to contain my opinion about. It's issues like this that I only feel totally comfortable discussing with other Black people. The U.S. is more of a melting pot in 2012. Everyone is mixed with something. I have white ancestors not that far down the line. I just know what I like. This is me saying that if my Love was still himself just wrapped in pale skin, I probably couldn't have helped falling for him the way I did before.

Sometimes we are so set in our ways and our beliefs that we forget that we can change our mind. Something I have never been am advocate for was challenged last night. Could I really say that I would have walked away from love because he wasn't the right race? I had almost given up on love when I met HIM. It wasn't by accident. It was kismet. You don't walk away from that I can admit when I am wrong. This is me doing that here. For HIM. It's been stated that "Love knows no color." I'm beginning to believe that it is true.

This Readers Review: Part VII: "Fifty Shades of Grey"

I've never been one to follow trends or jump on bandwagons. I just like what I like. So I usually only read books that interest me. But sometimes I can be slightly influenced by the culture. I became intrigued by all of the talk of the trilogy of "Fifty Shades of Grey." I just recently started the first book. And, I can honestly say that I'm perplexed. It wasn't what I wanted, expected or needed. The literature lover in me was not moved at all. I'm about halfway through it and it's not that great.

The storyline is basic with a slight twist. The most important issuing this book is the BDSM aspect. Since I'm not into that lifestyle, this book is really not for me. The author's language is very sophomoric. There is the over usage of the expressions "Holy ____ (fill in the blank with cow or sh*t). It tends to get a tad bit redundant. I don't know how this serious has become a #1 best seller. I found grammatical errors throughout as well.

This story grew from a short story based on the "Twilight" story. I can see that. Every other sentence, the author has to remind us how hot Christian Grey is. It's annoying to an avid reader. I like to lose myself inside an authors world. It was hard for me to do that here. I didn't believe any of the scenarios. Ana was bold and strong one second and then a submissive mouse the next. It's exhausting. The BDSM world is a little too weird for me. A little spanking, hair pulling, and tying someone up is cool with me. But, real hardcore BDSM is too much for me to handle. A real life Dominant/Submissive relationship doesn't really intrigue me. So, clearly, this wasn't the book for me.

However, I will finish the set. I need to know how this ends. I'm curious to see if the writing improves any, if Ana grows a permanente backbone and if Christian will ever like to be touched. I need answers. Even if they are badly written. Maybe I'm a gluttony for punishment. But I want to complete it. I'm hearing that a movie is in the works. It's the one time I'm hoping that Hollywood doesn't stick closely to the book. Either way, I'll wait to see it. "Fifty Shades of Grey" is kind of all over the place. It's too heavy on some things and not others. I will say that Christian Grey is a great complex character. I would love to know more about him. He is the saving grace of the book for me.

These Are Just My Thoughts...

- Twitter is the source of pure entertainment. The other night was one of those nights. Brian McKnight posted this gem. The ridiculousness that are the lyrics are only trumped by the creepy smile on his face. Brian, sir, really? You are 42. I'm gonna need you to stick to your earlier material. Leave the raunchy R&B to Trey, Chris, Usher and the rest of the youngsters. This song comes off very pedophile-ish to me. I giggle everything I hear it.

- I've been enjoying some really good R&B lately. I'm loving Monica, SWV, & Melanie Fiona's cds. They are all so good for different reasons. Oh & the "Think Like A Man" soundtrack is pretty awesome as well.

- I finished "The Hunger Games" trilogy. It was so good. I loved all three books. But, by far, my favorite was "The Hunger Games." To me, it was the most detailed oriented. Hopefully, I will see the movie as well.

- I love stumbling across great websites. I've discovered a few in the last week that have made me very happy.

- I am ready for he NBA Playoffs to begin. The shortened season has been nightly underwhelming.

- Politics have been really dirty lately. I'm over the Republicans mudslinging, namecalling and downright childish behavior. Come on, November. I'm ready to re-elect my President.

- I'm beginning to have a really bad feeling about this Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman upcoming trial. I want justice for the Fulton/Martin family. I pray that they get it.

- Since I've started drinking water more exclusively, whenever I drink something sugary it makes my tummy hurt. I used to love Cane's Sweet Iced Tea & now I have to water it down. I actually crave water now. It's amazing how quickly my body has adapted to such a big change.

- Acne Sucks! Yeah, that's about it. Ugh!

- I've just started "Fifty Shades of Grey." I'm slightly intrigued by this storyline. It's supposed to be an erótica that delves into BDSM, a lifestyle I know nothing about. I hear this trilogy is all the rage. It's also getting the movie treatment. So, I wanna know what all the hype is about.

- I am such a need. Reading makes me so happy. I love to get lost in the authors world.

- Cheers to the freaking weekend. I needed it.

This Reader's Review: Part VI "The Hunger Games"

I confess I was not sold on the hype of "The Hunger Games." From the first time I heard of the movie, I was struck by the similarities between it and "The Lottery." "The Lottery" was a satirical short story by Shirley Jackson. I read it in high school English IV. I haven't seen the movie yet. But I did finally break down and read "The Hunger Games" trilogy over the last few weeks. I was very impressed with the plot of all three books. I was pulled into this mythical world that are the Districts and the Capitol.

From the opening pages of THG, I am a fan of Katniss. She was this very fierce young lady. There are aspects of her character that I identified with. She is strong, she takes care of her family, and she is resilient. She's easily my favorite character throughout the trilogy. The world that the author, Suzanne Collins, creates seems so real. The scenes jump from the pages as you read. I was enthralled all throughout the first book. Couldn't wait to get to the end to see what happened. I was pleasantly surprised by almost all of it.

The story that unfolds in "Catching Fire" is intense. I wasn't sure what else could happen. I don't want to give any thing away. But, book #2 "Catching Fire" is a complete surprise story wise. This trilogy is bloody and brutal and gory. Not my typical cup of tea. But the way it is written pulled me in. I was a part of this story. I finished the trilogy in a little under 3 weeks. "Mockingjay" is the final book of the trilogy. The story comes full circle. I can say that Collins answered all of my lingering questions in this book. The ending is a bit unexpected. But, in hindsight, all is well in the literary world.

Reading the trilogy motivates me to see the film. I'm curious to see if it matches the book. I'm an avid reader. It's not very often that Hollywood gets it right. When it goes from book to film, things sometimes get lost on translation. I'm holding out hope that nothing is lost. I want Katniss to be just as amazing as she was in the book. For Rue to be as sweet as she was in THG. I'm not in a rush to see it. I'm still relishing the afterglow of finishing a really wonderfully great book. Reading great books always make me feel better. This trilogy def falls into that category. I'm a fan from this point on.

Compatible Much?

Compatibility is something that is needed in any friendship. But, it's especially important in a loving relationship. It's the things that we like most in another person. It's a connection to build on. "Oh, you think that the adoration laid upon MLK Jr. is misplaced? Me too." This makes us comrades. We're in the same arena. You and I are compatible. This is a good thing. After this, what's next? We set out to learn more about each other. Placing your check marks next to all the things we have in common. The more checks, the better. And, the things we don't have in common, we share with each other. This is the foundation of a relationship.

A quick Google search will reward you with a plethora of online compatibility tests. Some are based on astrology, others on religion. Somewhere someone decided that this was big business. I've taken a few. One, the 5 languages of love quiz, was my absolute favorite. My Love & I were very simpático on so many levels. The results of the test just confirmed what we already knew. He & I are kindred spirits. The results of the other one left me perplexed. It was contrary to everything we are. It got me thinking. What does the author of this particular quiz actually know?

When I met HIM, the attraction was immediate. I fell for his sarcastic sense of humor because it matched my own. We bonded over music and poetry and intelligence and quick wit and the fact that neither of us slept much. I was intrigued from the word go. I didn't think there could be anything there really. I mean he was in Detroit and in a situation. I was here in New Orleans and on the tail end of a draining relationship. I used to look forward to our text messages and phone conversations. I mean, we would stay all night talking and laughing and listening to music. We were friends. I mean truly. He was my friend. The more time we spent time together, the more things we found we had in common. This is still true today.

I wouldn't trade this level of compatibility for nothing. I've never had it before. Every couple has their thing. Ours was apparent way before I even realized it. Compatibility is a great thing. It can't be quantified or truly tested with a quiz. I let the results of a silly quiz rattle me. When in reality I know what I have, what we share. This is bigger than all of that. Sometimes if you take it slow, everything will fall right into place. You won't even realize it til it happens to you. I'm not an expert on relationships or even love (now music and poetry are another subject) but I know some things. I know what feels right. This much I know.

It's A Black & White World

I really miss those old family sitcoms that were a staple on Nick at Nite. Most of them were in black & white. I think that was a part of the appeal for me. There was something nostalgic about them. I loved how family oriented the shows were. That is clearly missing on present day television. I found myself thinking about the nights I spent watching them. I would stay up so late watching the reruns. I loved them that much. I used to make all my friends watch if they were at my house or on the phone with me. I was hooked.

My absolute favorite was "The Patty Duke Show." It was about these identical cousins with different personalities. I loved those girls. I would make sure I was home and up just to see them. It was almost always followed by another favorite "Bewitched." Sam was so amazing to me. Tabitha was adorable. That show was also a fan of "Dobie Gillis," "Green Acres," "I Love Lucy," & "Mister Ed." All of these shows made me laugh. Everything was always so simple for them. Simple can be very good. The ills of the world did not seem to permeate their sitcom world. It could be seen as unrealistic. But I always liked that aspect of the shows.

I wonder who made the decision to off these shows from Nick at Nite. I miss them. I'm sure I could find them on dvd. But, it's just not the same. I think some wholesome programming could do the world some good. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking. I guess I've just been in a reflective mood. Thinking about things from my childhood. These shows are a great memory. Can I just get them back? If only for a little while?

A Childhood Memory

I couldn't remember the last time I heard the music from an ice cream truck. Or for that fact, bought an ice cream from one. Imagine my surprise and utter excitement to hear the ice cream man last night! I couldn't get outside fast enough. I didn't even really want ice cream. But that music brought me back to my childhood. Back to the hot sticky days of a New Orleans summer that were only cooled down by the coldness of am ice cream from the ice cream truck. I was always a fan of the rainbow bomb pop and the nutty buddy. I remember the days of sitting on my porch with my brother, cousins, and friends enjoying our treats. We lived for those quiet moments. It was just that simple then. It reminds me of that good feeling that I always get when I think of those days. I just had to get a Nutty Buddy when I got to the truck for nostalgia sake. I felt like a 10 year old. And, I blame the ice cream truck. It's something about that song that does something to me.

Ladies Love Lyrics: Monica "Without You"

I have been playing Monica's "New Life" cd constantly. I have fallen for "Without You" which coincidentally is her next single. It's a great love song. The lyrics are awesome and the music is just right. I'm interested to see what kind of treatment this song gets for a video. From the first time I heard this song, I was sold. I knew it was a hit. It has all the elements of a great song. It's the song I play the most on her cd. It's definitely my new favorite. So, go ahead and get into these lyrics that I love.

"Only you
Can make me run
Only to you.
And, be there whenever I fall.
I fall and fall again over you.
Anything everything u do.
Makes me say I need u now.

Always take the time to
Love me right hold me tight.
Keep me coming home every night to you.
And ain't nobody gonna change my mind.
Don't think twice I've been looking for you all my life, baby.

(Chorus)
How did I survive all this time without you?
Without you, you, you, without you?
And I don't ever want to let you go.
Can't do anything, anything, anything, anything
Cause you're the only one I love.
Without you, you, you, without you oh...

(Bridge)
And me (oh baby) and me, (oh baby)
Can we start a family?
We made it official baby.
Oh, me and you
Every night I close my eyes,
I thank the Lord cause you're laying next to me.
Didn't think it was possible but loving you brings out the best of me, baby..."

Get Into It: "Think Like A Man"

I was wrong. So wrong. "Think Like A Man" was a hilariously good movie. I was not prepared for that. I can honestly say that I read Steve Harvey's book. It was not informative or groundbreaking in any way. It was a book filled with common sense stuff that any woman who has a brother, father, uncle, or male friends would/should already know. So, my expectations of the movie weren't that high. I really wanted to see the movie for 3 reasons: 1) Michael Ealy because I like him, 2) Kevin Hart because he is hilarious and 3) To see how Terrence J would do in a feature film. I'm glad I went to see it. It was worth the price of admission. I enjoyed every second of it. I also know that I will be buying it once its released on dvd. Yes, I was that impressed with it.

I love the way the basis of the book is integrated into the script. The characters are all lovable. My favorites are Kevin Hart's character Ced, Michael Ealy's character Dominic and Terrence J's character Michael. They are all flawed but essentially good guys. This movie is filled with celebrity cameo's from Lala Anthony, Tika Sumpter, and Morris Chestnut to Ron Artest, Chris Brown and Wendy Williams. The plot isn't as predictable as romantic comedies tend to be. I was engrossed in the film from the opening scene. Kevin Hart has some of the best one liners throughout the entire film. His character is going through a divorce and he has an affinity for strip clubs. Romany Malco's character Zeke was a dog. Simply no other way to describe him. But, he was very smooth. I really enjoyed him as well. Michael Ealy's Dominic was the most lovable male character to me. He played a chef who was kind of lost. Terrence was the ultimate Momma's boy. The relationship between him and his mom was beyond ridiculous but very entertaining. Comedian Gary Oldman was in this as well. He was the lone happily married man with kids. He was the voice of reason throughout the film.

The women are great characters as well. I love Taraji P. Henson's character the most. She is very driven, very successful and learns the most. Megan Good's character Mya is a gullible sweetheart as well. Regina Hall plays a serious role as Candice. I loved seeing her in a different light. Gabrielle Union's character was decent as well. Jennifer Lewis was hilarious as she is in everything. You never see Gary's wife in the film and Kevin's wife was mostly a no show until the very end of the movie. The relationships are all believable. I feel like I know these men, dated someone like them. The same thing goes for aspects opf the women in it. That is why I feel like the movie works so well. Steve Harvey pops up randomly on the film via tv spots to dispense advice from his book. It's weird and distracting to me. I loved the fact that Kevin Hart was also the narrator of the movie.

The music is something else that is a plus. A great soundtrack only makes a great movie that much better. The song that plays throughout the whole movie is the "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)" by John Legend. This song has been stuck in my head all day. I really dig it. There is also the Jennifer Hudson, Ne-yo, Rick Ross "Think Like A Man" track that has been getting a lot of play. Kelly Rowland (who also has a cameo in the film as well), Luther Vandross, Earth, Wind and Fire, RaVaughn and Keri Hilson all contribute to the soundtrack. I am sure I will be looking into getting this for my collection as well. I love the mix of old school tracks with new ones made specifically for the film. RaVaughn's "Same Ol BS" is also a track to listen out for. Brandon Hines' "Fire" is my song!! The soundtrack is a wonderful display of R&B at its best.

Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with this cast and this movie. I will recommend it to everyone. IT is just a great funny film. I loved it. I want to see it again. Laughter is always a great thing. I think that Terrence J will go on to do more movies. His acting has improved greatly since his role on "The Game." I also think that Kevin Hart's star will continue to rise. Taraji and Michael are bonafide stars and I loved that they were paired up in this film. There was great chemistry there. The film has already grossed $12.2 million on its first day!! That is incredible since the movie's budget was only $13 million. I will always support good art. This film falls into that category for me. So, go ahead and get into it "Think Like A Man!"

The Sweetest Thing

"The sweetest thing I've ever known..." - Lauryn Hill

The sweetest things are usually words spoken between loved ones. I find that the most uninhabited sweet words I speak are the ones I don't think about. The words that flow from my heart and out of my mouth before my brain catches up. When I just speak from that place of love, where fear of judgement or rejection does not exist. I just say what I feel. That is a beautiful thing.

Sweet nothings spoken to me from the man I love are just about my favorite things. I love the way he expresses his love for me. I think that those whispered quiet loving moments between two people in love are a precious things. We are privileged to take part in it. This Lauryn Hill song has been stuck in my head all day. It's also about the sweetest things. Go tell someone you love something you love about them today. Even better, whisper it to them.

Are Black Women Too Conservative?

This was the topic of discussion in one of my Facebook groups last night. I was told that most Black women grow up very conservative in regards to sex. A few men said that Black women are late to the game when it comes to certain aspects of sex. It's an interesting concept. One I don't necessarily agree with. I don't necessarily believe conservatism is the reason. As young Black girls, we are fed a lot of rules and regulations. The good girls grow up with the fear of being labeled a "whore" or becoming pregnant as a teenager. That fear is real. I blame my Mom for both.

Once a young woman crosses that line and voluntarily gives her virginity away, she's faced with a new set of fears. These fall along the lines of what she will or won't do. How far is too far? What is too freaky? Where does she draw the line? All of these questions are heavy on a good girl's mind. I know that I never wanted to be labeled as a "freak." That title was just as bad as whore or slut to me back then. I think that now I can say that I wasn't mentally mature enough for sex at 17. I wish I would've waited. But, there comes a time that clears all of that up for most of us. That moment of clarity is an epiphany.

Around the age of 25, I learned a few wonderful things about myself. I let go of that fear. Basically, I decided to define me for me. I learned what I liked, what my body wanted. I also wasn't shy about getting it either. I embraced my thoughts on sex and sexuality. I defined my own levels of freakiness. Not a man or any gossipy women. I was finally ok with me. I had to shed that image that I'd perfected of being this eternal good girl. I was a grown woman with a mind of her own and needs that had to be fed. I was more than ok with who I was. I am traditional in a lot of ways. Most of which do not translate into the bedroom. I know exactly what is right for me. No one can take that from me. There is nothing conservative about me in that way.

Places I Must Visit: St. Lucia

St. Lucia is a little island out in the Caribbean Sea. I worked with a girl from there a while back. Her accent and stories of her island home always intrigued me. The island is very lush and known for its beaches. St. Lucia is an interesting mix of mountains, rainforests, and beaches. The landscape of the island is very unique in that way. The climate ranges from 70 - 90 degrees all year round. I think that is just about perfect weather. I could live in that possibly. I could definitely vacation here. Scenery is my thing. I'm into it. St. Lucia would feed that hunger in me. This little island is on my list of places to visit.

A Sense of Humor

A sense of humor is super sexy. I don't get people who don't have one at all. I love to laugh. Even in the most inopportune times. I will laugh at just about anything. My sense of humor is a weird combination of sarcasm & intelligent wit. It's odd & off centered but definitely on point. And, it all belongs to me...& one other person I know who's sense of humor is identical to mine.

Laughter is the best free medicine in the world. Laughing relieves stress and eases the pressures of every day life. It's also one of the best things to share with someone. If you can find the one person in life who totally gets your sense of humor, hold on. It's like finding a kindred spirit in a crowded auditorium. It's special & unique. We just get each other.

I'm no comedian by any means. But, I love to hear people laugh especially when it's because of something I said. I've realized that I am mostly unintentionally funny. Which I believe is even better because I'm not looking for a laugh. I don't set out to make people laugh. I'm just glad I can. I'm also grateful for those who appeal to my sense of humor & make me laugh. They are special people in my book. Laughing is an easy exercise. I suggest you all indulge in it.

Get Into It: "Smash"

Television networks are over saturated with reality shows. And, I can admit that I can indulge in a few. But, what I love more than anything is a great scripted show with awesome actors. When I find a new one, it makes me very happy. This is what happened the moment I started watching NBC's "Smash." This show is based on a Broadway musical from inception to the stage. I am a musical junkie. I live for "Grease," "Dreamgirls," "Annie," & "Hairspray." So, I was intrigued by this show before it premiered.

The characters are all so different but they work. My favorite characters are Karen Cartwright, the small town girl with the big voice and Ivy, the sexy girl with the voice. These two women are vying for the role of Marilyn. Both are great actress and wonderful singers. But, other than that, they have nothing in common. I like them for totally different reasons. Every other character on the show are interesting for other reasons. The star of the show is the music. It's the thing that makes the show so different. It's just really great.

It comes on Monday nights at 9pm on NBC. It's been on since February. If you haven't seen it, you can catch up on past episodes on NBC.com or OnDemand. It's a really good show. The storyline is interesting. The music is great. The characters are likeable and relatable. For this to be the freshman season of "Smash," I'm excited to see where it goes. Fingers crossed that there is a season two. I will be watching if so. I can't wait to see what the rest of this season has to offer. "Smash" is just simply a hit.

Tupac Back?

Yeah, that's right, Tupac is back. Last night at Coachella, Dr. Dre did something amazing and so next level. He produced a hologram of Tupac performing. While it was at first shocking to see, it was amazing. I had been hearing about this performance all week. I wasn't fully prepared to see my favorite rapper of all time almost 17 years after his murder. The hologrammed Pac walked around stage, talked to the crowd and performed a few huts. Ironically, he did "Hail Mary." I'm still utterly amazed. Watch and be amazed as well. It's Tupac Amaru Shakur live at Coachella 2012. Simply Incredible!

Just Say No to the GOP & Their War Against Women

As the race for President 2012 heats up, I wonder if women are paying attention. The GOP has been waging war on women. In Arizona, they are signing a bill into law that outlaws abortions after 20 weeks. This is 4 weeks earlier than the federal standard. This is the slippery slope to overturning Roe vs Wade. If we don't stay on top of this diligently, this will happen. The GOP wants to redefine "rape" while also changing calling rape victims by that name. They want to call them "accusers." That significant change seems to lessen the reality of what happened. It's like accusing the victim. Since when are victims the guilty ones?

I am amazed that no one seems to be paying attention to what the Republicans are trying to do. If they keep regulating women's rights, we won't have any. Are these the kind of people we really want in power? This election is beyond crucial. We need to go out and vote in epic numbers. We have to let the Republicans know that we, as women, will not stand by idly as they reduce us back to nothing. I feel like I could rant about this forever. But, I won't. Just pay attention ladies before we find ourselves back in the olden days. This website lists some of the things that the GOP is attempting to "change." Take a stand women. We have to. Our livelihood is on the line. So, come November, let's all just say NO to Mitt Romney, the GOP, & their war against women.

New Music Releases: Monica & Melanie Fiona

So, just what are we going to get into today? Some new R&B music. There is a lot of good music out right now. I decided to review a few new projects that I am feeling. Both of the cds I chose are ones that I have been waiting on to be released. Both received setbacks but were worth the wait. The material was even better than I expected. The two projects that I am referring to are Monica's "New Life" & Melanie Fiona's "The MF Life." Let's get into them already.

Monica's new project "New Life" is a solid effort. I play it from beginning to end. I am a huge fan of her work and her voice. She is one of the few artist that I can say that I have all of their cds. I've always identified with her because she has always come across as personable. This cd is no different. Monica takes her listeners on a ride from heartbreak to finding true love. It is a ride that most of us can relate to. The lead singles "Until I'm Gone" & the duet with Brandy "It All Belongs To Me" are both great musical and lyrical songs to me. I am even more excited about potential singles. "Daddy's Good Girl" is a song that any woman in love will love. "My Big Mistake" & "Time To Move On" are the epitome of the end of a relationship & heartbreak song. "Without You" & "Amazing" are both testaments to her new marriage and husband. What is missing is the Rick Ross assisted "Anything To Find You" which was released last year as a single, a video and then shelved. I dug that track for the throwback 90's vibe.

Melanie Fiona's sophomore cd "The MF Life" was definitely a labor of love. This cd was on the verge of being shelved because of label issues. But, it was released and it is good. In my opinion, it is a better showing than her debut. The music & lyrics are more cohesive and fluid. The material flows better on this cd. Headed by her singles "4 AM' & "Gone And Never Coming Back," this cd is a relationship from start to finish set to music. I love her features on this cd. The two big ones are Nas & J. Cole. Both rappers give a boost to the songs that they are featured on. I am definitely feeling "Wrong Side of a Love Song" & "Running." I am curious to see what her label does as far as pushing this project. I cannot wait to hear what her next single will be. I just really enjoyed this cd.

These two cds have been getting heavy play around here. I was in need of some new R&B music. I was overdosing in Hip_hop in the last few weeks. I will always support great artist who put out great music. Why wouldn't I? If you are a fan of either, I suggest you give them both a listen. There are a few more projects I have to sit & give a good listen to. The #1 on that list is the new SWV cd. I am excited that they are back. Can't wait to hear what they have to offer this time around. For now, enjoy the youtubes. Get into Monica and Melanie's new music

Rant: So Food Poisoning...

Food poisoning sucks. It has to be the worst thing ever. The last 24 hours have been hell. No, like my literal definition of hell. I was the victim of food poisoning. It has been just awful. I ate some pasta from one of my (former) favorite restaurants.2 hours later, I thought I was going to die. My bathroom and I became reacquainted in a way that I don't ever want to again. I spent a good ten hours, off and on, on the bathroom floor. It was not a good night/morning at all. I was basically projectile vomiting. I even threw up orange juice. Do you know how awful that is? Words would do it any justice. Just know that it was not pretty. At all. It's been hell.

The above photo, along with dry toast and tea, is all that I've ingested in the last 48 hours. And, let me tell you that I'm beyond sick of it. I think I officially abhor saltine crackers. They are dry and get stuck in my throat. I can live the rest of my live without ever eating another one. This experience has definitely opened my mind about some things. Maybe I need to weed some food items out of my life. All I know is right at this moment, I am starving. And, even worse, I'm afraid to eat anything. So for now, I'm sticking to liquids and soup until further notice. For now, I'm just recovering in the land of the sick and shut in. Seriously, I just want my tummy back.

Ladies Love Lyrics: Christina Perri "Arms"

I swear I discover new music in the weirdest places. I heard this track in Target. I was beyond excited to find out that it was a Christina Perri song. I love her voice. Her first single was "Jar of Hearts" which I truly loved. She just makes me happy. This song touches me as well, especially the "you put your arms around me and I'm home" line. That's a lovely lyric. This lady def enjoys it. So hopefully I'm exposing you guys to a new artist as well. Take a listen and vibe with me.

"I never thought that you would be the one to hold my heart
But you came around and you knocked me off the
ground from the start

You put your arms around me
And I believe that it's easier for you to let me go
You put your arms around me and I'm home

How many times will you let me change my mind
and turn around?
I can't decide if I'll let you save my life or if I'll drown

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let a love get so close

You put your arms around me and I'm home

The world is coming down on me
and I can't find a reason to be loved
I never wanna leave you
but I can't make you bleed if I'm alone

You put your arms around me
And I believethatit's easier for you to let me go...

I hope that you see right through my walls
I hope that you catch me, 'cause I'm already falling
I'll never let a love get so close
You put your arms around me and I'm home

I tried my best to never let you in to see the truth
And I've never opened up
I've never truly loved 'til
you put your arms around me
And I believe that it's easier for you to let me go..."

Trayvon Martin Update

It happened on February 26, 2012. Today is April 11, 2012. It has been 6 weeks have passed since Trayvon's murder. Still no arrest, still no justice. Race relations are simmering right at the surface behind this. Many are beyond upset about the utter mishandling of this case. I've already blogged about my outrage of the Trayvon Martin case here. That's not what this blog is about. I felt the need to update people on what has or rather hasn't happened since then.

Angela Corey is the special prosecutor that has been assigned to this case. This week, she has decided to forgo a grand jury indictment. What this means is that the power to charge or not charge Zimmerman lays solely in her hands. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on how Corey feels about the case. This move is a bold and unexpected one. I want to hold out faith that she will do the right thing and press charges. There was a murder committed and the guilty party, Zimmerman, needs to pay for his crimes.

George Zimmerman has decided to "Speak" on his own behalf via a website. It can be viewed here. On this website, Zimmerman is doing two things: asking for sympathy and donations for his defense. Are you serious George?? I call bs on this website and its meassage. Where was the sympathy for Trayvon? No amount of donations can bring him back to his family. I am disgusted by this blatant attempt by Zimmerman to paint himself as the victim when he took a life. Sorry sir, but the victim card cannot be played here. Not by you. And, I feel some kind of way about him begging for money. I will also feel nothing for anyone who donates to this bogus fund. What is wrong with people? How is this behavior even ok?

Yes, Zimmerman has been crucified in the press. But, that is of his own doing. If he had not decided to take the law into his own hands, none of us would ever have known his name. He killed Trayvon in cold blood. I have no sympathy for weak little men who carry guns to make themselves feel bigger, more important. Yes, I also know my personal experiences with men in my familly have been murdered. But, the reality is right is right and wrong is wrong. Zimmerman was dead wrong. He killed a child. He deserves nothing less than jail.

The final piece of this weird puzzle is that Zimmerman's attorneys have now resigned. They claim they have lost all contact with their client. How is it even possible that a murderer is roaming free without anyone keeping tabs on him? Yes, I know that here people are innocent until proving guilty in the court of law. They have to go through that process first though. Since Zimmerman has yet to be arrested, people have decided his guilt for themselves. This is what a miscarriage of justice looks like. It's not pretty nor is it right.

So, what now? How much longer will Tracy and Sybrina (Trayvon's parents) have to wait to get justice for their son? It's been 6 weeks too long for them. Six weeks too long for all of us who have been following this sad case. The more I think of it, the more pissed I get. As much as I love the law, I know that it is beyond flawed. Lady Justice is clearly not blind. She sees exactly what she wants to see. All I want is justice for Trayvon Martin. He deserves it, his parents deserve it. Until this happens, I cannot allow myself to write about it anymore without getting so upset. Arrest George Zimmerman now. Give us justice for Trayvon.

I Sacrifice For Me

In our day to day lives, there comes a time where sacrifices have to be made. Some times they are small ones. Other times, they are huge ones. What are you sacrificing and why are you doing it? I've been thinking a lot about sacrifices in my life. Thinking about all that I've given up in the last few years. And, how much better I've become because of those sacrifices. The reward has been well worth the sacrifice.

Time is a factor that I play with all the time. I have sacrifices my clubbing time for things more substantial things. Going out is cool. But, for me, it's been over done. I lived in a nightclub for years. I loved it but I'm over it. From the ages of 14 to about 25, there wasn't a week that I wasn't in some club. I loved everything about it, especially the music & time with friends. To me, that's a very small sacrifice. I am no longer the woman that craves the nightlife.

It's easy to sacrifice when one is trying to better themselves, their situation, and life. That's a no brainer. It's an effort to give up the good in order to go to the great. I used to get my nails done faithfully every two weeks. I realized that the acrylic was killing my nails. I sacrificed something asethetic for something real. It's taken my nails years to fully recover from the damage I willingly did to them. Change can be good.

Sacrifices are a part of life. We all have to choose what we are willing to sacrifice to get to the next place in life. The choice is what makes us as humans so special. We get to choose what we want to give up. I love having he freedom to do just that. Sacrifice isn't a difficult word. The implementation of the word may be hard depending on who you are. I sacrificed for my greater good and the future that I want for myself. That is the greatest reason to sacrifice any and every thing.

Spreading Knowledge

When I was 15,my Uncle Larry gave me some advice that I've carried with me. He said "when it comes to relationships, you always want to be able to learn something new from your significant other as well as teach them something as well." Those words have always impacted me. I've found myself, more times than not, being a teacher but not a student. It's easy for me to give the knowledge I hold freely away. It's just part of who I am.

I love to learn about everything. I am a human sponge when it comes to knowledge. I crave it. Thinking back about past relationships, I've realized that all of the lessons that I've learned from them have been in hindsight. While in the midst of any of those relationships, I never learned anything worth holding on to or passing on. Granted, I learned a lot about who I was, what I wanted and what I would no longer accept. Those were no doubt great lessons. But not exactly what my Uncle was speaking of.

It took me a long time to get here. Here being that place of true understanding of what he meant. I am in a relationship that is beneficial to both parties involved. It transcends anything physical, financial, or emotional. This is an intellectual high. I learned things daily from him. I teach things daily as well. We are sharing knowledge. That is a beautiful thing. This is what my uncle meant. At 15, I wasn't concerned about all of that. There was no real depth to me or my relationships then. Now, I get it. Truly.

It moves me deeply. It's the way things are supposed to be. Intelligence is beyond attractive to me. It's a characteristic that cannot be quantified. But, it's super important. And, yes, I pride myself on being intelligent. Smart is sexy. The sharing of knowledge between two people who are already attracted to one another is amazing. Every day there's something new. Be it politics, music, literature, art, or math, all of it matters. All of the pieces matter. Spread knowledge people!

He Said, She Said

Word of mouth can be a dangerous thing. It can harm as well as help. The words can sometimes become distorted, misinterpreted as they pass from person to person. What truly constitutes gossip per se? Is it gossip if it's true? Or only when it is mean and malicious? What about telling secrets? I think people have gossip and general conversation confused. They are not the same thing.

He said, she said can cause one a world of trouble. People hardly ever own up to what they said in the beginning. I know that if what I said was the truth I have no problem repeating it to whomever. What it is will never change. Things can get lost in translation when it leaves your mouth and reaches the ears of another. One's perception of said words can mean a world of difference. I live by the creed of never saying something that I can't repeat or backup.

The bottom line is that gossip travels quickly in this modern technology era. Once it's out there, it basically takes on a life of its own. It grows exponentially as the seconds pass. It's just that simple. People talk, people listen. What they think is a monster of a different name. This entire blog was sparked by something I was told today. It's funny the way information will always find its way back home. What have you said today that you would want to take back? Anything? Hopefully, we were all impeccable with our words and thoughts today.

Classic Music: Drake "So Far Gone"

I remember the night Drake dropped "So Far Gone." He literally broke the Internet. His mixtape was widely anticipated. I had been a fan since I discovered "Replacement Girl" & "Closer" from his two less popular mixtapes. I knew that this will be would not disappoint. I was more than right. There isn't one track that I didn't like. It's classic to me because it's timeless music. It's still relevant to me right now & the cd is 3 years old.

Drake straddles that line between rapping and singing without being corny. I love his approach, delivery, and lyrics. I'm clearly a fan. If I had to pick a favorite from this mixtape, I'd have to give the edge to "Successful." That edge is only slightly over "Best I Ever Had" since it still makes me feel the same way it did the first time. "So Far Gone" is just good music. It came out during a down time in music for me, specifically in Hip-Hop. I've enjoyed everything Drake has released since then. But, I just feel a deeper connection to SFG. It's my classic music pick of the month. Enjoy the below tracks!

Review: "Scandal"

Shonda Rhimes has done it again. I'm claiming that her new show "Scandal" will be a hit and a fan favorite. It premiered last night. I am a fan. I was intrigued by the premise of the show because it's centered around a powerful Black woman. Her name is Olivia Pope and she is portrayed by Kerry Washington. The show is set in D.C. Pope is a lawyer who runs a "crisis management" firm. In essence, she and her people handle things.

The show also stars Columbus Short who I'm a fan of as well. The premiere was fast moving and interesting. I think it kept my attention because of the law and politics angle. Those are two arenas that I happen to love. In the midst of me loving the show, Rhimes does the one thing that I dislike about her shows. She takes a great strong, powerful woman and makes her incredibly weak behind a man. In this case, the man is the President of the U.S. I'm sure there is so much more to that story. I have to watch to see what develops there. The cast surrounding her are interesting but we didn't get to deep into them this episode. That is part of the appeal to get me to watch again.

You can catch "Scandal" on Thursdays at 9pm on ABC. It follows another Shonda Rhimes show that I love "Greys Anatomy." That's an awesome time slot for a new show. Rhimes is great at creating these characters that you instantly love. She got it right again with this show. Olivia Pope seems like she will be a wonderful character to get to know. It was everything I wanted it to be. A greatly written, wonderfully acted show. It has two lead Black actors which is very rare on network tv. I will continue to support. Hope others do as well. I have a feeling that this is a show that will be a ratings king. Get into it.

Get Into It: HTC Evo 4g LTE

I have been waiting patiently for this announcement. Sprint & HTC finally released the specs & info for the new Evo cell. It's bigger, better than the 4g & the 3d, both phones I have owned. It's called the HTC EVO 4g LTE. It will be available for preorder in early May. The phone will be released in June. I can upgrade in September. I'm super excited about it. It has all the things I've loved about the Evo line so far plus so much more. It's the first HD voice compatible cell phone. HTC has just boosted the expectations of other phones with this one.

I can proudly say that I am an uber fan of the HTC EVO cell phones. Since the first one was released, the HTC Evo 4G, I've been sold. I had a white Evo 4G that I loved. I then moved up to the Evo 3D. This phone has been my lifeline. It is simply amazing. I love the look and feel of it. It's the best phone I've ever had the pleasure of owning. I'm more excited that the new Evo will be available in white. I loved my white phone the best. The 3D was never available in white. The LTE is the bigger, better, badder version of my current cell. I am do for an upgrade in about 2 months. I already know what phone I have to have. I can't wait.

The actual specs are ridiculous. The kickstand that was missing from my 3d is back thankfully. The audio system will be supplied by Beats by Dre. The battery is bigger but embedded. It will run on Sense 4.0 and Android ICS. The pictures look amazing. The camera is 8 megapixels in the back, 2 mps in the front. It just seems like a great cell. I can't wait to actually get in my hands and try it out. Hopefully, it's as great in actuality as it is on paper. The Evo line has been pretty awesome so far. It seems that HTC has no plans on slowing down. If you're a Sprint customer like me, be sure to check this out. Get into it!

Bountygate

"Bountygate" has been plaguing my home team, the Saints. The team has been found guilty of implementing a hit for hire type program. In an investigation spanning almost 3 years, the NFL commission found the team guilty. The repercussions have been far stretching. Coaches have been punished severely. Players could possibly be next in line. What does this do in the long run? Nothing if you ask me.

Defensive coach Greg Williams has been named as the person behind this program. For his role in "Bountygate" he has been suspended from the NFL indefinitely. As a Saints fan, I feel no sympathy towards him. He was no longer employed by my home team. I am more concerned with the seemingly excessive punishment of the head coach Sean Payton. He has been suspended for the year. A whole season? I think that's way too much. What's a team without its coach? Goodell seems to be making an example out of the Saints coaching staff. I'm sure this sort of bounty program exists on other teams. The Saints aren't the only ones. It just makes me angry that a season could potentially be ruined.

And, to make matters worse, there are contract issues with our quarterback, Drew Brees. Players have left the team. The Saints seem to be imploding onto themselves. I do not believe that next season will be a good one. The Superbowl is also going to be played in my hometown in 2013. It would be karmic justice for the Saints to make it back to the big game and win at home. That would be the ultimate revenge on Goodell and his actions. Either or, I'm over "Bountygate." The anticipation of what's next has gotten old. I'm going to wait and see what happens during football in the fall.

Rant: Attention Seeking Folks

I have never needed to be the center of attention. I've never done anything just to get people to look at me or pay attention to me. That's never been my thing. I'm not overly dramatic or am I a drama queen. So being the true definition of an attention where has never fit me. For that reason alone, I cannot truly understand people who are that way.

To me, attention seekers are the people with theoretical self esteem. They are the ones who are constantly looking for validation via others. It's a sad personality trait. It's one I'm thankful that I never possessed. And, what's even crazier is that the validation they're seeking will never be enough, it will never fill that empty space inside of them. One cannot look to others for their self esteem. Seeking in others what one lacks in their own person is a trap. It will always be this endless cycle.

Attention seekers have to be the life of the party. It's just who they are. I try to ignore people like that. I can't get into them. They are too much work all of the time. I am always conscious of allowing them into my life. Their energy always conflicts with mine. I don't seek attention from anyone. Because the reality is whatever is meant for me will be mine. I don't have to knock anothers shine to get mine. Besides, I garner enough genuine attention from the right folks on my own. And, there is nothing better than that!

April's Random Thoughts

° Finally after two weeks of having technical issues, with my Evo, Sprint ultimately did the right thing and gave me a new (not refurbished) phone. I def was a happy customer that day.

° It's easy to allow someone's actions get to you. I'm learning how to NOT react to everything that people do. Some days are easier than others. But, I'm still a work in progress.

° With all the controversy surrounding "The Hunger Games," It makes me want to read the books now. I just don't think it is feasible right now.

° So sad that I had to return the cutest shoes yesterday. They just weren't good. I've had sore feet for two days because of it. I hate returning shoes. I am not that girl.

° I really love this "Murda Business" track by Iggy Azalea & T.I. I'm not really a fan of hers but she gets a pass with this one.

° I've been using a gang of oils in my hair while transitioning. Great for my hair. Not so great for my skin. Being oily is never a look I want to go for.

° I had way too much Ciroc last Friday. I was literally hungover all day Saturday. It was not a good look. Maybe I have to give the vodka up. That makes no sad though.

° This weekend was everything. Good times with my family are priceless. Great conversations are always a plus.

Ladies Love Lyrics: "Take Care"

This song has been stuck in my head for days now. I don't know why but I just love it. I can't help it. The lyrics do something for me. The beat is different though. Drake & Rihanna make hot tracks together. I cannot deny this. The official video for "Take Care" is supposedly coming this week. Can't wait to see the visuals. Until then, let's enjoy the audio track. Get into it!

"[Rihanna] Cause if you let me, here’s what I’ll do I’ll take care of you I’ve loved and I’ve lost

[Drake: Verse 2] Yeah It’s my birthday, I'll get high if I want to Can’t deny that I want you, but I'll lie if I have to Cause you don’t say you love me To your friends when they ask you Even though we both know that you do (you do) One time, been in love one time You and all your girls in the club one time All soconvinced that you’re following your heart Cause your mind don’t control what it does sometimes We all have our nights though, don’t be so ashamed I’ve had mine, you’ve had yours, we both know We know, you hate being alone You ain’t the only one You hate the fact that you bought the dream And they sold you once You love your friends but somebody shoulda told you somethin’ to save you Instead they say, Don't tell me, I don't care If you hurt, I don't tell you You don't care, if you're true

Don't tell me, I don't care If you hurt, I don't tell you You don't care, if you're true

[Rihanna] Know you’ve been hurt by someone else I can tell by the way you carry yourself If you let me, here’s what I’ll do I’ll take care of you I’ve loved and I’ve lost..."
